California Biennial

THE 2008 California Biennial is all over the place, and that means aesthetically as well as geographically. It includes the work of some 50 artists at over a dozen venues, mostly congregated at the Orange County Museum of Art, but with pieces or displays in Los Angeles, Tijuana, Joshua Tree, Santa Barbara, and San Francisco.

KATHERINE BERNHARDT has no patience for sitting around waiting for paint to dry. She prefers to get on with it, slathering acrylic onto canvas with two-inch brushes at breakneck speed. "If everything is working, I can do three or four paintings a day," she reports.
